Erdoğans Tyrkiet: Et dystopisk billede på samtidens politik

PhD student Leor Uestebay has recently contributed to Tidsskriftet Antropologi with the article 'Erdoğans Tyrkiet: Et dystopisk billede på samtidens politik.'

In this paper, he discusses how the President Erdogan in Turkey exacerbates people’s anxieties and instrumentalises dystopian visions to legitimize his authoritarian presidency in the aftermath of the failed coup of 2016. Unlike the liberal tradition charged with political idealism, Erdogan's Turkey is concerned with defending the country against 'domestic and foreign enemies' that demands a constant surveillance of citizens by the government. Instead of a hopeful political program, Erdogan promises his supporters unity and protection on the grounds of paternalism, nationalism and religion.
