”Hvem er egentlig Hade-Hanne”? Mediale tilnavne i dansk

Researchers of onomastics often claim the field of bynames to be “fuzzy”. However, this does not necessarily imply that systematic research in this area is completely impossible. On the contrary, it implies that a challenging and interesting task might lie ahead. In that vein, this contribution proposes a new category to be subject to onomastic investigation; a category that could be termed “medial bynames”. Normally, bynames are perceived as either historical or as belonging to the local/private sphere, but medial bynames are in fact both contemporary and firmly situated within the public sphere. Since the category is defined here as (quasi) lexicalized, non-official names used in print and electronic media, this is of course not coincidential. Drawing on a large, morphologically systematized corpus material showing the productivity of the category in Danish, the author discusses the relevance of the proposed category in onomastics. He also points to a number of theoretical problems related to this new notion whose main function seems to be “pseudo-intimacy”. One highly relevant question deserving the attention of future anthropo-onomastic research is whether the category “medial bynames” is as prominent in other languages as it seems to be in Danish.
