Pawan: Prison Master

Associate Professor Atreyee Sen has contributed with the chapter 'Pawan: Prison Master' in the book 'Bombay Brokers', edited by Lisa Bjorkman.

Sen's book chapter, 'Pawan: Prison Master', tells the story of Pawan whose ability to endure a tough prison life ends up becoming the basis of a small, illegal business in Bombay. The volume, is a collection of short chapters telling the stories of ordinary and spectacular people who negotiate their way through life and the labour market in the city. Sen's contribution is a gripping example of how the corrupt bureaucratic machinery that runs Bombay's penitentiary system opens up a space for thriving informal businesses in prison surrogacy.
