Primary fields of research

My research focuses on health, health systems and life conditions of people in Uganda and other African countries (Zambia, Tanzania, Burkina Faso), and in Denmark. In my ethnographic research I focus on how epidemics, health interventions and treatment possibilities influence everyday life, social relations and inter-subjectivity, and in particular how socially and economically vulnerable people manage uncertainty and insecurity resulting from historical events such as epidemics, political unrest and armed conflicts.

The AIDS epidemic and antiretroviral treatment have been central to my research for more than two decades. Recently I have initiated research on the consequences of COVID-19 and lockdowns in Uganda for young people and their reproductive health. A central theme in all my research has been women’s (and mothers’) life conditions and management of uncertainty and how it changes over time. This has among other things also resulted in an ongoing research project on the increasing labour migration of Uganda women to the Middle East.

I do my research and research training as part of inter-disciplinary projects on global health, gender and human security, carried out in collaboration between Danish and Ugandan universities.

My recent monograph Secrecy and Responsibility in the era of an epidemic. Letters from Uganda (2020) is a literary ethnography that explores global questions of inequality and responsibility, focusing on the consequences of the AIDS epidemic and its treatment.

Alongside my research on the anthropology of health and life conditions I am interested in the practice of anthropology and the anthropological labour market. How is anthropology translated into competences and skills outside of academia and how has the practice of anthropology outside of academia influenced the development of the discipline? These questions are explored in the books The Moral Work of Anthropology(2021) and Antropologien på arbejde [Anthropology at work] (2021), both of which focus on the case of anthropology in Denmark which already has a long history of venturing into various societal arenas outside of academia.

At the Department of Anthropology, I am the coordinator of the researcher group on Health and Life Conditions (HALC), and a member of the cross-cutting researcher groups om Creative Ethnography and Impact.
