Several studies indicate negative effects of Facebook usage on academic performance. This article argues that there is more to the connection between students’ Facebook usage and their academic performance. Three independent studies were carried out: one study examined the effects of a Facebook sabbatical on students; two further studies explored the Facebook usage behaviour of students who felt that a sabbatical would affect them aversely. The results indicate that Facebook plays a more central role in student’s lives than that of a mere platform for procrastination. It is a place that combines education and work with a high degree of social interaction.
